“I was nineteen, terrified, and about to walk out for my first paid gig—and Vivian took my hand backstage and said, ‘Darling, they came for the light. Go give it to them.’ I have carried that sentence for forty years. She made room for every one of us.”
In loving memory of

“A song never truly ends—it lingers in the light it leaves behind.”Her favorite words, spoken from every stage
A Life Remembered
Chicago · 1935 — 2024
Vivian Castellano was born in Chicago in the winter of 1935, and from the moment she first sang for the neighborhood on a South Side stoop, it was clear the city had produced something rare. For six decades she was a fixture of the great jazz rooms—from smoky basement clubs to the gilded ballrooms of the Loop—where her velvet contralto and effortless glamour could quiet a crowd of hundreds to a hush, then lift them roaring to their feet. She was, as one bandleader put it, “the last word in a room full of noise.”
To watch Vivian work a stage was to witness pure joy in motion. Draped in sequins and pearls, she treated every performance—whether a sold-out theatre or a Tuesday-night set for a dozen regulars—as the most important night of her life. She toured the world, recorded a dozen beloved albums, and mentored a generation of young singers who still speak her name with reverence. Yet for all the applause, those who knew her best remember the warmth she carried offstage: the open door, the second helping, the laughter that filled a kitchen long past midnight.
Vivian is survived by a family she adored and a city that adored her back. She leaves behind a catalog of song, a legacy of generosity, and the memory of a woman who believed that beauty was worth dressing up for and that every soul deserved a standing ovation. The lights of the stage are dimmer now—but oh, how brilliantly they shone while she was in them.

Share a Memory“My parents had their first dance to Vivian’s recording of ‘Autumn Light.’ Sixty years later we played it again at their anniversary. Thank you, Miss Castellano, for scoring the best moments of our family’s life.”
“She never once let me pay for coffee, always asked about my kids by name, and could still hit that low note that stopped your heart. Chicago won’t sound the same. Rest easy, Viv.”
